Canadian Baptist Symposium 2025, Part One: A View From Ontario

On 26 April 2025, the Canadian Baptist Historical Society and the Acadia Centre for Baptist and Anabaptist Studies co-sponsored the Canadian Baptist Symposium.

Thanks to the available technology, it took place concurrently at McMaster Divinity College (MDC) in Ontario and Acadia Divinity College (ADC) in Nova Scotia.

In total, eighteen papers were presented throughout the one-day conference (two plenary addresses and sixteen papers in parallel sessions). The following images provide a little glimpse into the day for those who attended the symposium at MDC.

After a few opening comments from Melody Maxwell and Carol Anne Janzen (delivered online), the conference opened with our first plenary speaker, David Bebbington, whom we streamed from ADC.

After the first plenary session and a brief break, we began our parallel sessions. The in-person presentations occurred in one room, while we live-streamed papers from ADC in another. At MDC, we heard from Baiyu Andrew Song, Robert Revington , and Jonathan Cleland.

As noted, attendees had the option of listening to presenters in person, or streaming the presentations from ADC.

During the lunch break, we held a business meeting for the Canadian Baptist Historical Society. (Details of this meeting will be available in a different post.)

The afternoon started with a presentation from our second plenary speaker, Michael Haykin, who presented from MDC.

Following the second plenary session, we heard from speakers during our second parallel session, including Dudley Brown, Seidel Abel Boanerges, and Sandeep Sinha.

During the final session, those of us at MDC heard from Christopher Crocker and James Mwendia.

After a few closing comments from Taylor Murray, Paul R. Wilson (President of the Canadian Baptist Historical Society) closed the conference in prayer.

If you were unable to join us, the Canadian Baptist Historical Society has plans to publish a collection of papers from the day.

(We will briefly explore this same event from ADC in a separate post.)
