NEWS | Annual General Meeting, 2026

On 25 April 2026, the members of the Canadian Baptist Historical Society met at Jarvis Street Baptist Church in Toronto for their annual general meeting (AGM).

President Paul R. Wilson opened the AGM with prayer and words of welcome. In his report, Paul spoke about recent developments in the Bulletin of the Canadian Baptist Historical Society and the CBHS book series. He also highlighted plans to co-host a conference next year to commemorate the centenary of the schism of 1927. Finally, he noted a recent initiative led by the CBHS to replace the headstone in Toronto’s Necropolis Cemetery on the grave Black Baptist pastor Washington Christian and his wife Ann.

This AGM also saw the CBHS acknowledge Mark Steinacher, a past president of the society, for his many years of service to the CBHS. The CBHS officially recognized him as Honorary Past President.

Following the business, the CBHS hosted four paper presentations. First, we heard from Robert Revington, who presented a paper on “A Presbyterian in a Canadian Baptist Conflict: Louis H. Fowler’s Role in the T. T. Shields Controversies at McMaster University.”

Next was a paper from Joetta Fernando and Melody Maxwell, who co-presented a paper titled: “Answering the Call: Baptist Women in SecondCareer Ministry.”

Binoy Cherian presented the third paper, titled “From Mission Field to Mission Partner: The Quiet Transition of Canadian Baptist Mission in India (1947–1957).”

The fourth and final paper was from Seidel Abel Boanerges, whose paper was titled “Canadian Polycentric Mission: The Great Things Project and the Global Missional Exchange of 1974–1976.”
