NEWS | The 2022 Rawlyk Lecture (ACBAS)

From our friends at the Acadia Centre for Baptist and Anabaptist Studies:

Join us for the 2022 Rawlyk Lecture on September 20 at 7pm, hosted by Acadia Centre for Baptist and Anabaptist Studies

The lecture will be hosted in person at Acadia Divinity College and online

Dr. Gordon Heath will be speaking on “Canadian Baptists and the Fall(ing) of the British Empire, 1945-1956”

Like many Protestants in Canada, Baptists were ardent supporters of the British Empire in the two world wars. But in the postwar years there was a marked shift in attitudes to the empire and Canada’s place within it. This presentation will trace the evolving discourse related to new conceptions and visions of national identity in the face of a rapidly changing and increasingly dangerous world. By 1956, it will argue, Baptists were on their way to re-imagining a Canada without the old imperial assumptions and relations.
